Castlegar is one of the largest communities in the West Kootenay area of British Columbia with a population of just over 8,000. Incorporated in 1946, Castlegar has become an important part of trade and transportation in the region. The economy is mainly based on tourism, mining, and forestry.

You will always find plenty of fun outdoor activities in Castlegar. For fishing lovers, you will find plenty of places to drop your line along the convergence of Columbia and Kootenay Rivers, as well as in the serene Arrow Lake.

Cyclists can explore the C&W Trail, which is part of the Trans Canada Trail. Hikers will find a wealth of places to visit like Brilliant Overlook and the Waldie Island Trail. You could also spend some time exploring Syringa Provincial Park.

Of course, not everything is related to the outdoors. Downtown Castlegar is home to the Castlegar Station Museum - a rail station that’s more than a hundred years old where you can still take a ride on the caboose! The Doukhobor Discovery Centre provides a glimpse into the past with 10 historical buildings right along the Columbia River.

Getting Around in Castlegar

Castlegar is located at the junction of Highway 3, Highway 3A, and Highway 22. Often called Columbia Avenue by the residents, Highway 22 runs through the city. Most of the residents have their own vehicles.

The public transit system is provided by West Kootenay Transit. It provides service in Castlegar and the nearby areas. During the summer, some residents will take their bikes on their daily commute, but most prefer having a vehicle.

The West Kootenay Regional Airport is operated by the city, and it offers service to both the Calgary International Airport and Vancouver International Airport. The only other nearby airport is Trail Airport, which is 40 km south of the city.
