Established as a trading post in 1794, Fort St. John has a population of just over 20,000 residents. While this may seem small, it is the most populated municipality in the district. A little known fact is that Fort St. John happens to be the oldest settlement established by Europeans in British Columbia today.
Fort St. John’s economy is mostly made up of the retail, service, and industrial fields - with the city home of BC’s Oil & Gas commission. Forestry as well has always been an important element of the local economy.
What You Can See and Do in Fort St. John
Although this may be a small town by a lot of people’s standards, that doesn’t mean there are a lack of things to see and do in Fort St. John. Those who buy one of the homes for sale in Fort St. John will have some fantastic activities in store for them.
In the heart of the city, you can spend some time at the North Peace Cultural Centre. It is an entertainment venue that hosts live theatre and events.
Another feature that makes Fort St. John a place to call home is the fact that it has quite a few parks and green spaces to enjoy. Centennial Park is a favourite among the locals, and hosts a farmer’s market during the spring and summer seasons. Some of the other parks to enjoy are Kin Park and an off-leash dog park, Toboggan Hill.
You can find plenty of trails in the city, with the Fish Creek Community Forest located north of the city. And if you’re into mountain biking, you’ll be at home with some of the region’s most fantastic mountain biking trails.

Getting Around in Fort St. John
The main highway that runs through is Highway 97, often called the Alaska Highway.
The Fort St. John Airport is just a couple of miles to the east of town. This is a small airport that offers two runways. Transit in the city is managed by BC Transit. Of course, being a small town, bikes are popular in the summer months. Though, most of the residents will have their own vehicles to help them get around the city during the winter months and beyond its borders.
