Abbotsford is a sizable city found along the U.S. border. It is a city one hour outside of Vancouver and sits along the Fraser River. The population is around 153,000 people, making it one of the larger municipalities in the province. It was established in 1892 and was incorporated in 1945, later amalgamated with Sumas (1972) and Matsqui (1995).

The largest employer is the City of Abbotsford, which employs 62% of the population. Many of the other residents commute to Vancouver for work, although there are many local businesses, as well. The local economy is considered diverse with the major industries being retail, manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation.

This Japanese-style garden was created in 2008 in honour of Fukagawa, Japan, Abbotsford’s sister city. The main attraction is the Farm Workers’ Memorial Statue.

Getting Around in Abbotsford

The city has public bus transportation provided by the Central Fraser Valley Transit System. Some of the residents choose to cycle when weather permits, but most have a vehicle to help them get around. This is especially true when it comes to those who are commuting to and from Vancouver.

The main roads and highways nearby include the Trans-Canada Highway, the Fraser Highway, and the Abbotsford-Mission Highway. Abbotsford International Airport serves the city, and the Vancouver International Airport is just a short drive away. The city’s airport is also where the Abbotsford International Airshow is held each year.
